As a black woman, it often feels as though we have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders.

We raise families, build communities, create movements…

 

All while managing the stress that trauma and oppression have on our physical and mental health. It may be rare for the people around you to offer help, but you don’t have to worry about that here.

The Black Girl Healing Project exists to help black women feel more vital, and by vital I mean having a sense of what it might be like to feel well.

Here we have open and honest conversations about mental health and all the ways oppression and marginalization affects black women - from depression, the strong black woman stereotype, eating disorders, and everything in between.

The latest research shows that 48% of black women have some form of cardiovascular disease. Black women are also 50% more likely to suffer from depression than white women, and 20% more likely to report experiencing serious psychological distress than white women

Black women, we are  are strong

We put capes on our backs and support ourselves, our families, and our communities. But often, it’s to our own detriment.

It’s time for change.

Hi there, I’m Jennifer.

I am a Registered Dance/Movement Psychotherapist and Holistic Nutritionist.

I created The Black Girl Healing Project because as a black woman living with depression, I often felt alone and misunderstood. I also watched many of the women in my family struggle with mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and dissociative identity disorder (to name a few).


They struggled because “black people don’t get depressed,” and “you don’t put all your business in the street” by getting help and seeing a therapist.

The Black Girl Healing Project is the first step, for me, in breaking the cycle and changing the narrative around mental health within the black community.
